It's my pleasure and I'm eager to introduce to you the extreme quality of Randy Briley's B'Cool Products fenders and blanks. For those of you not familiar with the high quality products B'COOL offers, you'll be doing yourself and your clients a big favor by looking into the Pro Builders and Skin-Tite series of fenders and blanks.
Seeing how I'm not a lightweight by any means, the fender blank below was fresh off the brown truck and I just had to demonstrate the heavy, durable construction of these fenders by planting my size 12's on top of it. But that's not where it stops...the quality continues into the finish and beyond. Shape and fit is exact and true. Constructed from up to 10 gauge material, I dare you to compare the B'COOL Products quality to anything available anywhere.
(Click above for some detailed photos of the quality difference)
B'COOL Products provided the high quality fender blanks for our Metric Revolution project bike, RATIKUL, and others in the MoonShine Steel shop. If it's about quality for your build, look into B'COOL. Tell Randy that MoonShine sent ya !

My name is Carl Stephens (say it with a southeast Kentucky drawl, thank you very much) and I have been fortunate enough to have been chosen to join the ranks of some very talented guys and gals in a nationally televised custom motorcycle build-off that aired on ESPN Network's "Deuce" channel recently.
I'm talking, of course, about the Metric Revolution TV Series. Each builder was hand-picked from thousands of entries all over the nation and I felt very fortunate to have been involved in the first season group. I put heart and soul into building my first full blown (and I do mean blown, i.e. supercharger) all out custom chopper while overcoming some tremendous hurdles during the build. That bike, Puffed Rice, earned me the opportunity to give it my all once again...this time with a brand new bike build that aired over a 12 week period on a nationally televised series!
I would like to use this corner of the web to give you an inside look at this entire project from a "rookie" point of view...while I and my fellow "choppers" cut, chop, hack and saw our way through a brand spankin' new stock metric motorcycle in hopes of bringing home the prizes and awards on the other end of this build-off. Whether you're an old friend or a new one I just haven't met yet, Thanks for coming by and please check back from time to time as I attempt to add content to this site.
I, like so many others, have thoroughly enjoyed every precious minute I've been able to spend on 2 wheels and in the wind. How many times have we searched for the right words to explain the passion we feel and the love of the ride. "It's therapy for me"...I've said it and you, no doubt, have used those words as well. This site is dedicated to those metric owners, builders, riders and especially to the fans of these fantastic custom creations derived from the finest motorcycle manufacturers in the world. If your passion for the custom ride has rounded the twisted curves of obsession, you know what I am talking about. We never forget...it's always about the ride but it's also about the dreams, the designing, the engineering, the building and finally the creation of that perfect sled that will fling us down life's highways.
Thank you again for visiting my site. Please be patient as I develop this site and more content is added. There is much to do and we'll get to it ASAP. Also...don't hesitate to share your constructive thoughts and ideas about this site and possible future content.
A SNEAK PEEK AT THE METRIC REVOLUTION SERIES
Here ya go...a brand new 9 minute "promo" of what's to come on the
ESPN2 GARAGE Spring 2007
This spot focuses on 2 of the 22 builders: Brad Ruell (The Wrench-Pro Cruiser Class) out of Tampa, FL and Stephen Keller (TOCC-Pro Sport Bike Class) from Pennsylvania. In my opinion (what's that worth?), this production has a special flair to it all it's own. It's interesting and exciting to watch because it's focused on real people and real dreams, hard work from hard workers turning out the most amazing custom bikes anywhere. You find yourself drawn into the competitive spirit of what's sure to be an exciting climax after the 12 episodes and 22 builders stories are finally revealed.
The Las Vegas hosts of the show, John "Baron" Vaughn-Chaldy, Nancy G and Kyle Woods bring their very own brand of fresh excitement along too as they offer incites into the world of custom creations and lead you in and out of the lives and creations of the 22 chosen builders for this "revolution". Check it out and let me know what you think.

LONDON, KENTUCKY
Triumph Motorcycles and MoonShine Steel Choppers
and
So...you thought you've seen it all, did you? There's nothing left to be done that hasn't already been done in the custom bike world, you say?
Keep your schedule open for September 14 - 17, 2006 for the debut of a most extreme custom Triumph cruiser. This stunning example of the Triumph Motorcycle Company's commitment to the custom cruiser class began life at Triumph's state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Hinckley, England. After arriving in the States, this raven beauty made it's way to Kentucky where it is undergoing a most amazing transformation here at MoonShine Steel Choppers. That custom creation (dubbed "RATIKUL") will be unveiled in Las Vegas, Nevada during the Las Vegas Bikefest 2006 at the Fremont Street Experience.
During this much anticipated event, there will be a display of over 2 million dollars worth of custom metric motorcycles. The 40,000-plus attendees and the general public will have an opportunity to meet the builders and judge the exotic builds over a three day period. Every attending participant will be afforded the chance to cast their ballot towards the final voting; resulting in "hundreds of thousands" of dollars in grand prizes. A VIP / Celebrity dinner is slated for Saturday night September 16th at the Hooters Hotel and Casino, with the Metric Revolution TV crew on hand to tape the much-anticipated "unveiling" episode of the contestant builders' creations.

METRICS IN THE NEWS
New York Times news, that would be. Perusing the web today will reveal "news" of what many of us metric bike owners, riders and customizers have known for quite some time. For years, we that chose to ride and build these metric-based creations have endured more than enough criticism from the ranks of the unknowing and uninformed. From my experience, it was always best to turn a deaf ear to those attitudes and realize that as a metric rider/owner/customizer/builder, I, along with my metric-building brothers and sisters, are even more individual and unique in that we did not fall to the pressures of peers and "follow the pack". Never was my style. I enjoy good company regardless of affiliation as long as the company is deemed good. That may explain the independent lifestyle and career of over 30 years as a solo-flying owner-operator traversing the nation's highways behind the hood of a Peterbilt. I won't attempt to analyze it any further than to say...that's the way I rolled then and the way I roll today. Do what you need to do and don't succumb to the masses urgings just for the sake of fittin' in.
It's my viewpoint that the clever ad campaigns containing slogans courting that free and independent spirit residing in most of us found another easier, more prominent target...one that is closer to the surface rather than the soul where that spirit resides...a target that can be found just underneath the leather-clad, logo-adorned sleeves & apparel of multitudes going with the flow cause that's what everyone else is doing.
Having got that off my chest...recent news across the web and in printed media are exposing how trends are indeed changing. Check out this New York Times article about the custom motorcycle revolution. I agree with Mr. George P. Blumberg..."Metrics have come of age". Only problem is...what am I gonna do when these metrics become mainstream and it's the thing to do?
JUST A ROOKIE
First things first...Welcome and Thanks for visiting my site. This site is mostly dedicated to my personal involvement as one of the Metric Revolution television series' fortunate four...a quaternity of rookie motorcycle builders/customizers competing in the first season of a very different "reality-based" bike build-off competition on the ESPN2 network. It's been a long road for all involved...there was a tremendous amount of work to be done by the developers, producers, camera crews, editors, sponsors, etc...all stuff I know nothing about. I simply have to appreciate their efforts and remind myself that the favorable combination of circumstances that led to the fateful call informing me of my inclusion in this exclusive group was a golden moment. Now...as we countdown no longer months but days to the premiere episode of the production, I'd like to provide you with a little info about one of the rookies.
rook'ie NOUN: 1. Slang a. An untrained or inexperienced recruit b. An inexperienced person; a novice
At 52 years of age, it is somewhat uplifting to be referred to as "new" at something...anything. The word conjures up cerebrations of freshness, youth, wide-eyed inexperience full of expectation...all appropriate words to describe the inner rookie penning this preface. That's the way I approached this project and that's what supplied the mental boost to see RATIKUL completed and shining under the VivaVision canopy on Fremont Street in Las Vegas. And as the outward greying man looks inward...I'll take any inference to alleged youthfulness.
To reveal who I am it would probably be better to explain who I am not. I am not a professional bike builder. I am not the guy that will initiate nor engage in diatribe about what constitutes a true chopper vs a custom vs ??? I will not ridicule you for riding whatever your heart desires, be it metric or so-called "American" or clone....be it small displacement or a twin-engine super radical class sled. I won't diss you for choosing to own and ride a sportbike a.k.a. crotchrocket. I will not be offended if you refer to my attempt at flat black and wide whitewalls as a bobber. I will not be found criticising the Teutels and Orange County Choppers because of their fabulous success story. I will not accuse you of conformity if you choose to shave just as I prefer you not label me when I do not want to ink my body. I am comfortable with your "sleeves"...you be OK with the skin I was born with and a haircut every now and then. I do not fit in many places because I cannot conform. Strange as it is, this whole independent "biker" spirit is supposed to be about freedom and independence...but the end result is, most of the time, just another way to corral a man's worth for the unified number benefit of a few at the top of the heap. So I ride away. I ride on 2 wheels or I ride on 18. Either way I ride, I ride withI am appreciative of the fact that somehow...Someone smiled upon the life of a guy like me resulting in this chance-of-a-lifetime opportunity. I will be forever grateful regardless of the outcome of the show's competition.
As my fellow rookie classmate, Dana D'Oench, voiced to me in Vegas...there are no losers...we all have won."

Carl Stephens MoonShine Steel Metric Revolution build off motorcycle project...RATIKUL...a Triumph Speedmaster based custom transformed into the stylish creation you see here. This hand built custom Triumph Speedmaster was designed, engineered and built inside the MoonShine Steel shop located in the Big South Fork National park area in southeast Kentucky. RATIKUL features many innovative engineering marvels including effective use of a reversed engine/powerplant to properly drive an in-house designed friction drive system. The naturally aspirated stock parallel twin engine design was modified to include a unique oil-less turbocharger and the stock dual carburators were replaced with modified 48 mm throttle bodies using Bosch injectors. Radical air plenum design houses ample boost inside the front mounted Hilborn style "blower" scoop. Other unique features include the larger than normal tire and wheel sizes...a 20" 280 on the rear and a tall 23" on the front. An air adjustable front fork was used for altering the ride height from slammed to 4.5" of ground to frame clearance. This very special custom bike based on the Triumph "new Bonneville" platform also contains a modified clutch basket which enables the driver to operate RATIKUL without a conventional clutch. The semi automatic clutch engages via centrifugal force as the engine nears 1500 rpm. Custom in-house 304 stainless steel exhaust and turbo boost supply piping, hand tooled leather seat, heavy steel B'Cool Products fender blanks, radical and stylish 1.5" custom handlebars, mid controls, dual 6 piston calipers up front and a host of other uniquely applied, well thought features bring this ultra long, super low custom Triumph Speedmaster to a yet-to-be-rivaled stance. Arguably, the most radical, wildest custom "Bonneville" style Triumph ever created...and it's all from the Metric Revolution rookie class competitor Carl Stephens and his MoonShine Steel Choppers shop in Kentucky USA. Watch for the bike to be featured within the 12 week series of shows coming on ESPN2 beginning March 31, 2007.

DAYTONA & BIKETOBERFEST 2005
The Metric Revolution
The Bikes...The Builders...The Lifestyle
It is indeed a great honor to have been chosen for the upcoming television series..."METRIC REVOLUTION". To say it''s a big deal for me would be an understatement. From where I sit in a small town in southeastern Kentucky, I can only imagine the promise of this opportunity...not just for myself but for my fellow "rookie" builders and all the other fantastic builders involved in this upcoming nationally-televised series. I, for one, came away from the filming of the first episode in Daytona at Biketoberfest, amazed at the custom bikes from the pro shops. It was a privilege to meet and speak with Mike Stafford at MGS CUSTOMS and Doug Keim at CREATIVE CYCLES and to realize these are regular guys in spite of their great success stories within the custom bike arena. It is really a big deal for me to be able to observe people like Brad Ruel, THE WRENCH ONLINE, and see that all the attitude is built into the custom bikes, not his rather quiet personality. I have a feeling Brad might get louder when he has his tin in the wind...I caught a glimpse of a bike very similiar to his on the east end of the bridge dropping into Daytona Beach with a set of blue lights behind him parked on the shoulder. Probably just wanted his autograph or something...right, Brad?
From Jaxon Fyffe at WILD CARD CUSTOMS, Sam Nehme and crew at BMS CHOPPERS to Mike Dusold, at DUSOLD DESIGNS and Justin & Andy at VIKING MOTORCYCLE, (awesome, awesome Honda VTX customs, guys). I am confident I have experienced the best of the best in the high end of custom metrics. I can''t leave out Don Gray (I always knew you were not Bob...Don!), of DON GRAY CUSTOMS, whose creations I have been able to witness first-hand at the Cincinnati V-Twin Expo, the first annual Louisville Hot Bike/RC Components bike show, Star Days in St Joseph, MO and other venues where our paths have crossed. Don is another guy with a calm demeanor but all the attitude is revealed in the custom bikes he fabricates in the Music City. Last of the cruiser class pros but certainly not the least...Antonio Renzi, my California friend! His chopped Yamaha Road Star, Genesis, has been a great inspiration for design since I caught the photo shoot and some details about him in a recent magazine layout. Catch more on this bike and Antonio at MODESTO CUSTOM CYCLE. And a note to Antonio...thanks for your theories on the supercharger tuning on my own Road Star...I''ll let you know how it goes.
I''m not even going to start with these guys pictured above...the crotch rocket class guys. I will say this much though...as I rolled into town late on the evening prior to the first day of filming, I noticed all these blue "disco" lights over at the Shores Resort and Spa where the event was being hosted during Biketoberfest. Yep...you guessed it...the sportbike guys. This is a serious bunch of lunatics that just happen to have some of the most amazing custom creations I have witnessed anywhere. What kind of sick southern mind does it take to chop up a ''Busa anyway, JASON SAPP? All I can say is stay clear of these guys...all of ''em. One of these guys, Adam Canni, actually built a supercharged Yamaha Road Star back a couple years ago and it made the annual calendar spread that Yamaha (now Star Motorcycles) makes available to us all each year...I got to meet him for the first time here in Daytona and told him I had a pic of one of his bikes on my own shop wall because I admired the bike so well. Now he''s doing the sportbike thing...go figure. Maybe he''ll make the calendar shoot again and I can put another pic up on the wall again...this time with a radical rocket.
Thanks to all the crew at Daytona Beach and Biketoberfest 2005 for a wonderful time and a great experience. I''ve got a lot more to say about my rookie classmates but that''s another story...later.
Like Jason Spillers of RC COMPONENTS put it so well in the video trailer...
Let the competition begin!
P.S. Tommy Graves...tell us ONE MORE TIME...what would you do to be on this build-off? :-)
Ride safe, y''all.
AVON TYRES North America
You just gotta check out the very latest exciting offerings from Avon Tyres below. This innovation takes everything in a different direction. I've heard rumors of these fantastic new products some time ago but it is official now...not merely speculation. Click the tall rubber for more info...
Can you imagine the possibilities? There's much more involved here than mere tire sizing...this represents the "next big thing" in custom motorcycle creation. This new 280/40R20 89V AM42 (rear) will be the latest additions to Avon?s top-selling Venom range. Check that...280 mm wide...a low 40 profile...AND
it's now available in a 20" diameter tire ! And you know if Avon Tyres is rolling them up...the top wheel guys are already racing to bring you some wild new stuff to wrap these new tires around. You excited yet? It gets better...click here for more.
SUPPORT YOUR HOOTERS
In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Hooters chairman Bob Brooks loaded up one of his Hooters Air 737s with supplies and dispatched it to the hard hit Gulf Coast region. In addition, he donated $225,000 to the Red Cross Katrina Relief fund.
Recently...we heard news of how the money intended for those victims was grossly misused and in at least one instance...for a bottle of champagne purchased in San Antonio.
Mr. Brooks stands up again..."It bothers me as an American that resources that were intended to help victims of this tremendous tragedy were spent this way. Even if it's in my restaurants it's still not right. If FEMA will let me know where to send the check I'll get the $200 out right away."
Mr. Brooks...my MoonShine Steel hat is off to you, sir. Your generosity does not go unnoticed although you would probably prefer it did. I understand if an announcement was made by you, it was in hopes that others might follow suit and right some very ugly wrongs at the hands of greedy and ignorant individuals. It's a prime example of standing for something you believe in and actually walking the walk and not just talking the talk.
Thank you, Mr. Brooks & Team Hooters ...for steppin' up to support the real spirit of America.

...with these guys, it's definitely a sickness. It's a good sickness though and one that you don't want a cure for.
The crew at Ego Tripp wheeled us up here at MoonShine Steel for our MetricTV bike, RATIKUL, with a super special, great looking design incorporating our desire to continue the "moonshine" theme throughout the bike. RATIKUL also has the distinct honor of wearing Ego Tripp's very first custom 23" front wheel and you gotta check out that 20" tall monster rear wheel specially made for the new AVON Venom 280 and MoonShine Steel's very own friction-drive application....one purr-fect example of my idea
that
"REAL CUSTOM BIKES DON'T COME WITH INSTRUCTIONS"
Each of the 4 spokes within the wheel design is actually a "crescent moon" arc with a raised centerline and they matched the brake rotors to the design as well. ...Coming Right Up!
MOONSHINE ... The term "moonshine" actually orginated in Europe...not here in Kentucky where the best of the best "stumphole" has been brewed. The term was used in England as far back as the 1700's. The word referred to "occupational pursuits which required night work...or work by the light of the moon."
BOOTLEGGING ... however, did begin here in America and the way I hear it goes is something like this...
It was a picture perfect day in Kentucky & the Big South Fork NRRA region as young and old gathered from far and near to our annual county-wide October festival, McCREARYFEST.
What started as a cool, overcast Saturday quickly gave way to brilliant blue skies and warmer temps as if the sun itself seemingly cleared the way for the American tradition of a parade down Main Street U.S.A.
